Elbow Injuries

Elbow joints consist of bone, cartilage, ligaments and fluid. Surrounding muscles and tendons help the elbow joint move. These structures are susceptible to injury and disease. A common elbow condition is tendonitis, typically caused by sports such as tennis or golf. You may also get elbow tendonitis from overuse. Other causes include sprains, strains, fractures, dislocations, bursitis and arthritis. Treatment depends on the cause. Elbow injuries occur most commonly during:

• Sports and recreation
• Work and related tasks
• Home repair projects
• Accidental falls

Most elbow injuries in children occur during sports, play or accidental falls. Risks are higher in contact sports such as wrestling, football and soccer — or high-speed sports such as biking, in-line skating, skiing, hockey, snowboarding or skateboarding. When a child or teen sustains an injury near a joint that could threaten the growing end (growth plate) of long arm bones, you should have it evaluated sooner rather than later. Older adults risk injuries and fractures due to diminished muscle and bone strength or osteoporosis. They are also prone to problems with vision and balance, which increases their risk for a fall or other accidental injury. Don't take chances with an elbow injury, especially on a child or early teen. Bring it to the experts at PTS for a complete evaluation and care.

We provide comprehensive, expert treatment for a variety of back and neck (spinal) problems, including:

• Low back pain
• Muscle spasms
• Muscle imbalance and weakness
• Joint dysfunction
• Postsurgical bac</neck rehab
• Degenerative disc disease
• Whiplash injuries
• Pinched nerves
• Disc herniation
• Sciatica
• Postural pain
• Stiffness

PTS is one of the few independently owned centers in the area to offer personalized, one-on-one care. By combining our experience, skills and training and working closely with referring physicians, we can help patients achieve better results. Because no two patients are the same, our back and neck pain treatment program may use different therapies or modalities, even with the same condition.

Therapy tailored to your specific needs
Whether you have had back pain or immobility, a spine injury or back surgery, we tailor your therapy to your pain, general health, physical abilities and goals for recovery. We begin therapy by trying to alleviate your pain to allow stretching, strengthening and stabilization. Our team uses manual therapy techniques, which help promote blood flow and oxygenation while decreasing pain and inflammation. We incorporate core strengthening into most treatment programs to improve your torso strength and posture and prevent reinjury.

Don't let back or neck pain keep you from work, sports or play.

Foot and Ankle Injuries

"My feet are killing me" is one of the most common complaints we hear from patients. While your feet are not literally "killing" you, foot and ankle problems can have a tremendous impact on your health, mobility and functional capabilities.

Getting back on your feet
At PTS, we are specially trained to identi-Y and treat foot and ankle injuries caused by trauma and orthopedic problems.

Shoes are often the cause of foot and ankle problems. And it is not just women who suffer because of high-heel fashions. Some men also squeeze their feet into tight but fashionable shoes at the expense of their own physical comfort and health.

To stay on your feet and keep going, your shoes should be comfortable, fit properly and provide maximum coverage of the surface area under your arch. Your shoes should also be able to absorb shock while you walk or run and provide stability for your heels.

In addition to ill-fitting footwear, feet and ankles can be damaged by trauma, injury and disease, including:

• Plantar fasciitis
• Heel spurs
• Achilles tendonitis
• Sprains and strains
• Diabetic and peripheral neuropathy
• Flatfeet and high arches
• Arthritis

No matter what your foot and ankle physical therapy needs, our mission is to help you return to full function quickly and safely. We will educate you about your condition, treatment options and ways to avoid future problems. We will also help you improve your strength and conditioning through physical therapy and therapeutic exercise.

Shoulder Injuries

Shoulders are vulnerable
Your shoulders are the most mobile, flexible joints in your body. But all that capability comes at a price. The shoulder anatomy is susceptible to overuse, repetitive stress and strain-type injuries caused by weakness and/or trauma.

You can injure your shoulder while playing sports (especially overhead throwing sports such as baseball and football) or while lifting groceries or even gardening. According to the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, about 6 million people seek help for shoulder pain each year. Most are not athletes.

When you experience shoulder pain, PTS can help. We typically begin treatment after an extensive evaluation of the injury and your specific complaints. Treatment aims to reduce pain, inflammation and swelling, increase circulation, relax muscles and prevent atrophy.

Advanced care for shoulder injuries
Over the years, PTS has helped patients of all ages with all kinds of shoulder injuries, including:

• Torn rotator cuff
• Impingement
• Sprains and strains
• Adhesive capsulitis (frozen shoulder)
• Muscle and tendon tears
• Ligament tears

We can help you avoid shoulder surgery. We've found, for example, that two out of three torn rotator cuffs heal completely without surgery. Our goal is to maximize your function and minimize your pain. And we'll teach you correct body mechanics to help prevent reinjury and keep you active.

Patient-focused care for a better quality of life
Our mission is to provide advanced, personalized shoulder rehab programs — delivered with a compassionate touch — so you can return to full function quickly and safely.

Over the years, PTS has helped some 30,000 patients from all walks of life to regain their function while relieving their pain. Discover the difference personalized one-on-one care can make in your life.

Knee Injuries

Your knees are the largest joints in your body. And because they are large joints subjected
to all kinds of stresses and strains from all the things we humans do on a daily basis, they tend to get injured. Knee injuries and resulting pain are not just for competitive athletes. People young and old can injure
their knees performing everything from simple, daily household tasks to hobbies to work-related movements. Our experienced physical therapy team knows knees better than just about anyone around. We customize treatments and tailor rehab programs for fast, long-lasting results. We continue to improve our knowledge, skills and abilities through continuing education on the latest physical therapy techniques. We offer focused, hands-on care for all types of knee pain and dysfunction:

• Ligamentous tears (e.g. ACL, LCL, MCL, PCL)
• Chronic and acute pain
• Patellofemoral problems
• Meniscus tears (menisci are cartilage pads in the knee)
• Sprains, strains and fractures
• Total and partial knee joint replacements

Total knee replacements are becoming common
Total joint replacements are becoming more and more common, particularly in older people with arthritic joints. The bone ends of our joints are covered with smooth cartilage. Healthy cartilage allows easy, pain-free movement. But cartilage that is damaged by arthritis creates friction and makes joints stiff and painful. Healthy joints are enclosed by fibrous tissue with a smooth lining called the synovium. Synovial fluid is produced by this tissue and reduces both friction and wear on the joint. Over 500,000 total joint replacements are now performed in the United States annually. Total joint replacement is one of the great orthopedic surgical advances of this century.

Rehab programs focused on getting you back on your feet We focus our rehabilitation programs on active techniques that enable patients to reach their maximum potential quickly and safely. Getting patients quickly back to their active lifestyle is always our first priority. Our mission is to help people function at their best. We want you to move without pain and get stronger so you can avoid future injuries. So what would you like to do again without pain? Play tennis or golf? Run? Walk? Participate in a team sport? Enjoy a hobby? Just get back to living? Let our dedicated professionals help you reach your goals safely, effectively and quickly.
